So long, fairwell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye

Well, as many of you will be aware, today is my last day at Capital Community Foundation (teary eyes). Over the past 2.5 years I feel I've really grown to know many of the voluntary groups we serve in Southwark. I'm sad to go, and my time in London and at the Foundation has been enjoyable and fulfilling, but it's time for me to move to Hampshire the forseeable future.

Thanks to those of you who've been reading this blog while I've been its custodian. Below is a picture of Zaheer, who's taking over as Grants Officer for the Southwark Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest. Any queries as to funding should be directed to Zaheer from now on, and with a bit of persuasion, I'm sure he'll carry on the blog with any interesting developments we hear about.

Snowball!

Last week saw the 3rd Southwark Snowball, at Glazier's Hall. It's very much a highlight of the year for us at CCF, and, we hope, for those invited.

In the last year, 234 Southwark community groups have received a total of £1.2 million in grants. The Snowball is the celebration of the activity of these groups who are working to make Southwark a better place.

We've had lots of positive feedback from attendees, and it really was wonderful to get all of the people leading grant-funded community groups together, under one roof.

I helped to man the sound desk and projector, and tried to make sure that all of the performers were in the right place at the right time. Musically, there was something for everyone - from the young dancers of Positive Education Learning Organisation through to the multi-instrumentalists of the Tribute Trust and the dynamic South London Jazz Orchestra.

There were speeches from dignatories and then the 'Spirit of Southwark' Awards, recognising work that has shone particularly brightly over the past year.

Spirit of Southwark Awards went to the following groups:

•Mums Arise - Best Newcomers
•Life and Living Team - On a Roll
•Sports Out Music In - The Energy Award
•Southwark Cyprus Turkish Association - Best Use of Retirement
•Pembroke Academy of Music - Young Bucks
•Arab Cultural Community - Hidden Heroes
•Mental Fight Club - Biggest Splash

Ice Skating at the Natural History Museum

Continuing our insight into the staff of the Capital Community Foundation, I thought I'd let you know about our recent extra-curricular activities.

Last night we managed to get tickets to the Ice Rink at the Natural History Museum. It was a beautiful evening which went by almost without incident. The picture, above, shows most of the group before anyone had fallen over ;-).

Halloween Lunch

Our Customs and Excise secondee Grants Officer, Joanne, came up with the idea of a communal Halloween lunch yesterday. People baked cakes, cooked quiche and prepared bat-shaped pizzas. It was quite a feast for the eyes as well as the belly!

Third Annual Southwark Snowball

By now you may have heard that December 6th will be the date for this year's Southwark Snowball!

In association with the Southwark Alliance, we'll be bringing together Southwark grantees, funders, and a number of local dignatories for what promises to be the event of the festive season. And what's more, this year we'll be at the impressive Glaziers Hall.

As anyone who's been at a previous Snowball will tell you, it's an evening of music, speeches, awards and general good cheer, with good food and drinks provided.

Keep an eye out for your invitation over the next couple of weeks!

Child Protection Cartoon

A couple of weeks ago, several members of our staff (me included) were involved in a session of voice acting for a cartoon that will soon be put together to advertise SELF's Child Protection Training scheme for community groups. Special thanks to Mick and Howard from Life and Living for their help with recording the vocal track.

Learning: Public Speaking Fundamentals

Masterclasses for groups:

These sessions are to help your group develop. Eligible groups can take part in quality learning from respected sources to improve on your skills, such as business planning, fundraising, managing projects, and leadership.

If your group is eligible for Neighbourhood Renewal funding (ie, constituted, with a Management Team, has an income of less than £50,000 an is working towards improving your area), then you are invited to a series of masterclasses from the Directory of Social Change, held in Southwark. The first session is on the 12th of August, held in Peckham and is Public Speaking: the fundamentals, led by Geraldine Morel, A DSC trainer. Download the booking form to book your place!

Black History Month

Each year we receive many applications for Fast Track grants from the Neighbourhood Renewal Community Chest (up to £1,000) for Black History Month events in Southwark.

I've noticed, in a great many cases, people haven't left enough time for their applications to be processed, over the past couple of years.

If you're planning to apply for a Fast Track grant for a BHM event, give yourself the best chance: get your application in early

We advertise the fast track grants on the basis that we need at least 4 weeks for processing these grants. It can often take a little longer, as we assess applications strictly in the order in which they're received. Even then, if you're successful, you'll need to allow a couple of weeks for you to return paperwork formally accepting the grant offer, and then to receive and bank the cheque.

In other words, if you're making a Black History Month application, I'd advise you to do so well in advance of October to maximise your chances of being awarded a grant.

Monitors

We have 7 17" CRT monitors that we have replaced in the offices of SELF.

If anyone would like to pick up some monitors, we're keen to pass them on as soon as possible to free up space in our office.

Guardian Society Supplement

Last week's 'Society' supplement of the Guardian included 2 interesting articles highlighting the good work of voluntary groups in Southwark that have been awarded funding by SELF.

You can read the first, written by Mark Drinkwater (who many of you will know from SAVO), here.

The second article talks about The Guy Fox History Project and their Guardian Charity Award.

It all makes for encouraging reading, I'm sure you'll agree.
